Emergency School Closing Procedures

Whenever it is necessary to close the schools due to the weather, the Superintendent of Schools will make the decision based on police department reports, road conditions from local villages and the County, area weather reports, local weather conditions and checks of road conditions by school district personnel and the District’s primary transportation provider.

  • SCA Parent Council presidents, grade-level chairpersons and room mothers or fathers will receive up-to-date emergency school closing information. We recommend that you know the name and phone number of your child’s room parent. He or she will have the correct school closing information.

  • On days when schools are closed, all school programs, including sports, extracurricular activities and continuing education classes will be cancelled.

  • Cancellation information about school activities scheduled on weekends will be made available by calling individual school offices. A recorded message will announce SCA, sports and school program cancellations.

  •  School closing, or delayed opening, announcements are provided by the following media. (Announcements will ordinarily be made between 7 and 8 am)

Radio
WALK (97.5 FM), WBLI (106.1 FM), WCBS (880 AM), WBZO (103.1FM),
WOR (710 AM), WINS (1010 AM)

Television
NEWS 12, Long Island Cable Network

Bus parents will be contacted in the event that a bus encounters difficulty which might make it late for pick ups or drop offs.

Private, Parochial, BOCES and Special Schools

  • When the Manhasset Public Schools close, all bus transportation provided by the school district for students attending private, parochial, BOCES, and other special schools outside the area will be cancelled.

  • When the Manhasset Public Schools delay the opening of school by one hour or two hours, buses used to transport students to private, parochial, BOCES and other special schools will also be delayed by one or two hours.

  • When the Manhasset Public Schools announce an early dismissal, bus service for students attending private, parochial, BOCES, and other special schools will depend on availability of drivers and dismissal times requested by schools. Manhasset’s transportation director will coordinate bus arrangements. Each non-public school must make its own decision on an early dismissal.

Delayed Opening
The opening of school may be delayed by one or two hours due to early morning weather conditions. The delayed school opening schedule is as follows:

School/Grades

ONE-Hour Delay TWO-Hour Delay
Shelter Rock School

Kindergarten 1/2 day

9:25 am

10:25 am

K-6 Full-day schedule

Munsey Park School
Kindergarten 1/2 day

K-6 Full-day schedule

10:00 am

11:00 am

Middle School & High School
Grades 7-12

9:13 am

10:13 am

  • Bus schedules will also be delayed by one or two hours. For example, if your child’s regular school bus pick-up time is 7:54 am, a one-hour delay will change the bus pick-up to 8:54 am, a 2-hour delay will change the bus pick-up to 9:54 am.
  • Announcements are provided by the radio stations and TV channels identified above.
  • A delayed opening is subject to change if the weather and/or road conditions remain hazardous. The Superintendent retains the option to close the schools when the potential for a hazardous situation exists. An announcement, if necessary, will be made by 7:30 am.

Early Dismissal

  • Early dismissals are considered only in extreme situations due to weather conditions or other emergencies such as power failures, etc.
  • The availability of school buses will determine whether early dismissal is possible.
  • Early dismissal will be reported on radio and television and through the Manhasset website.
  • Secondary students will be dismissed first so that they will be home to care for younger siblings. Elementary students will be dismissed once secondary students are home.
  • SCA class parents will notify parents of early dismissals. While efforts will be made, the SCA and the District cannot assume the responsibility of making contact with parents because it is not possible to reach everyone through the telephone chain, especially during normal school hours.
  • Parents are advised to be alert to weather conditions which may close schools and make safe and appropriate arrangements for your child in the event of early dismissal.
