Summer Studies Process and
2009-2010 Review

For more than 30 years, the SCA has sponsored the Summer Studies Awards program to encourage Manhasset juniors to participate in a meaningful summer activity by giving recipients a monetary award. Only Manhasset High School juniors may apply.  Awards are not granted on the basis of academic achievement, class rank or need.  They are granted based on enthusiasm, sincerity and suitability of the program to the candidate.

Any enrichment activity that students take part in during the summer between their junior and senior year will be considered.  It can be related to the arts, music, academics, sports or personal growth.  It can last for one week or the entire summer and take place anywhere.  Information on possible programs is available in the Guidance Office.

Candidates must submit a written application outlining accomplishments, school activities and community service, a photograph, two teacher recommendations and an essay on personal qualities and interests including reasons for selecting the summer program.  Applicants are then interviewed by a committee comprised of SCA members, school faculty and community members. No single award may exceed $1,000 and the money must be used the cover the cost of tuition, books or supplies.

The 2009-2010 Summer Studies program awarded over $11,000 to 15 highly qualified recipients for programs ranging from theater to science. All applicants made excellent presentations and selection was very difficult. We would like to thank all students who put the time and effort in to participate.

For the 2010-2011 school year, the SCA has generously budgeted $13,000 and we look forward to the process this year.
